The main strength of the Fediverse is that it is spread out on many independent servers. It is a strength because it gives grassroots communities direct control and ownership of the network, without relying on tech companies.

However, this structure can also make it more difficult to find stuff or see complete versions of profiles and threads.

There is more info about why the Fediverse works like this (and how problems can be solved/mitigated) at:

@FediTips The main strength, but the main weakness too, because anybody can set up an instance with shady intentions and full impunity.

@stemy @FediTips yes, and with how the communities work and how they hold each other to certain communicative standards, it works a lot better than ex-bird place. I see so much more content here that is relevant and interesting to me, and so much less of lies, propaganda, trolling and hate. The risk is there of course, and likely there's some of these bad crops in here as well, but they don't exactly get a stage. That's a big plus for me 🙂

@FediTips

The Cliff Note is that the fediverse is like NNTP, but most people have never experienced NNTP.

@FediTips

If the point of the Fediverse is to spread the network across multiple independent servers but the content that is spread accross those severs is not transparently accessable by every user and content from other servers is being actively blocked because it offends the fragile sensibilities of the local moderator then the entire supposed point is point less. It is nonsense.
