Lots of new people, nice to see you 🥳

The idea is to help people who aren't technical create their own online services through managed hosting, where the hosting company does the techy stuff behind the scenes.

Some particular highlights include a beginner's guide to starting your own Mastodon server:

...and starting your own Nextcloud server:

GYOS is aimed at non-technical people, so it focuses on managed hosting.

If you're slightly techy though, I'd highly recommend these projects. They let you add services to your VPS or home server through simple graphical interfaces:

Yunohost at @yunohost, more info at

Libreserver run by @bob, more info at

FreedomBox at @freedomboxfndn, more info at

Has anyone tried all three? Which one did you like the most, and why? I plan on testing Yunohost later today when I get home but I was hoping for some feedback first to see which is the most popular, stable, secure, etc.?

I haven't tried these properly, all I can suggest is giving each a go and seeing if it fits your needs.

They should be compatible with similar hardware.

They are all under development so there's reasons to keep an eye on all three.

@homegrown I tried YunoHost. I like it so far but haven't played with it much. When I have more time to install more apps and use them for a while I might post a more in depth review. So far it looks like a neat way for those new to self hosting to get their feet wet.

I found out about it from your post so thanks for turning me on to it!

@homegrown I am using storageshare by hetzner and I am very satisfied by the service and pricing!
