You can transfer your Mastodon account to a different server if you would like. The process allows you to keep your follows, followers, bookmarks, lists, mutes, blocks and domain blocks. Your old posts will remain on the old server, but they will redirect people to your new account.

There's a complete step-by-step beginner's guide for how to transfer your account at:

➡️ fedi.tips/transferring-your-ma

It might seem a bit long, but it combines several processes into one guide.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Did you in Misskey, you can transfer not only your account of followers, follows, blocks, mutes, but also your posts, photos, and videos too?

Did you know you can do this from Mastodon to Misskey?

#FediTips

@Linux

As far as I know that is cloning the posts rather than moving them? The threads attached to the old posts would not be cloned, so it's not quite the same thing as moving posts?

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services How do you think I over 15,000 post on a Sharkey instance that I've only been a member of for the past few moths. I'm talkative, but I'm not that talkative. 😂

You can move from Mastodon to Misskey and take all your post with you (photos and videos too). In a little while, I'll be moving from Sharkey to Misskey, and I'll be taking my stuff with me there too. -- I'll ping you when done.

@FediTips I am curious - is this also possible between different Fediverse projects, and if so which one?

@juergen_hubert

Yes, it is! For example @pixelfed supports it (at least partially, at the moment?), as do various *key platforms.

However, not all of them support it, and some of them may have different levels of support. Also there's the complication that some promising server types you could move to aren't supported in the long term yet because their software is still in alpha testing.

As the guide is aimed at beginners, I'm trying to keep it simple by just including Mastodon examples 🙂

@FediTips @juergen_hubert @pixelfed you can also transfer between Mastodon, Misskey, Sharkey, Iceshrimp, Akkoma, and half a dozen other software as well :zerotwo_shrug:

@FediTips
Anyway of just bringing my filters? I don't care about anything else. Thx

@FediTips It’s worth mentioning that followers need to follow back. Profile on old server is not deleted too.

Something is better than nothing, export/import works.

@sunil

No, they don't. 🙂 If you follow the guide linked to above, the follows transfer seamlessly. Your followers automatically follow the new account without them doing anything. Most of the time they don't even notice you've moved because it's so seamless.

@FediTips I followed your directions a few days ago and it worked with no problems. Thank you.

@FediTips

"Your old posts will remain on the old server, but they will redirect people to your new account."

No guarantees that will remain true over time.

But, if you have to move, you have to move.

@SpaceLifeForm

There are no guarantees of any internet service or content remaining online over time 😦

theguardian.com/technology/201

The only way to make sure would be to host your own online services (...and if anyone is interested in doing this, have a look at growyourown.services).

@FediTips When you set up your own Mastodon server, you can transfer even your posts with a script: social.luca.run/@luca/11211585

social.luca.runLuca Hammer (@luca@social.luca.run)Attached: 1 image @ErikUden@mastodon.de @guerda@ruhr.social @svenja@fedisabled.social Ja, Inhalt hat dann den gleichen Zeitstempel. Originalpost: https://det.social/@luca/109559157244375603 Importierter Post: https://social.luca.run/@luca/109559157272902502 Kurzbeschreibung 1.

@FediTips
I would add to post over several days at different times of the day the details of when and where you will be moving. Why?
1. Your followers will make sure they can still see you.
2. Your followers will know what to do if they can't see you.
3. Your followers will know the new account is really you and not an impersonator.

@CassandraVert

Yeah, good idea to tell people you're moving! 👍

On the web and all apps (except the official ones), the old account will show the address of the new account when the redirect happens, so that will prove which account is real and not an impostor.
