You can also use @nextcloud to set up your own private messaging service:
https://growyourown.services/review-of-talk-app-for-nextcloud
The service has its own dedicated mobile app for Android and iOS too.
Major downside is it doesn't have any kind of federation (yet), so you can only talk to other people on your server.
If this sounds like something you'd want (for example an internal chat system for your friends, family or organisation), it might be worth looking at this.
No, it's not XMPP.
There is an XMPP add-on for NextCloud, but it has no connection to the NextCloud Talk add-on.
It would be nice if Talk used XMPP but unfortunately it doesn't.

The most important question is, does it have end to end encryption?
@nextcloud
I think the only e2ee on Nextcloud at the moment is for specific file folders?
@homegrown
Yeah, e2ee on Nextcloud has always confused me, I don't even know if they have it for files/folders. Here I was asking specifically for this private messaging service, does it have e2ee like for example signal or matrix has?
@nextcloud
I get the impression it's a "work in progress"? You can set particular folders which are e2ee, so it's like an optional extra for file sharing.
This messaging service doesn't have e2ee.
@homegrown
Do you know how I can set specific folders with e2ee?
Hmm...
Looks like they have not been maintaining this properly?

What a shame
@homegrown
Oh, that makes a lot of sense! I remember creating an end to end encrypted folder on Nextcloud long before, but now I can't do it anymore, no matter how hard I look I can't find the option. And I've also heard people say that Nextcloud has e2ee, but now no one says that anymore.
So they have not been maintaining it properly, that clears my confusion. Thanks a lot for looking into this and finding that link, you're awesome

I've just found this - https://github.com/nextcloud/end_to_end_encryption/
And there it mentions a limitation:
E2EE is currently not compatible to be used together with server-side encryption
So a while back I moved to @tio's Nextcloud server on https://files.trom.tf when my old provider shut down their service. And I know Tio has enabled server side encryption, so maybe that's why e2ee is not available for me right now?
I hope they fix these and make it work with server side encryption too.
