@FediTips

When I create a thread, I always reply to the first post with every reply.

So I (and especially the readers) have the entire thread together in one view.

When I reply to the following post, the post and one answer are displayed. To read the thread you have to click again and again.

@csickendieck

I don't think so?

That would make threads difficult to view for most people?

If you're replying directly to the first post with each reply, anyone clicking on a reply will have most of the thread hidden.

"When I reply to the following post, the post and one answer are displayed. "

What are you using to view Mastodon?

@csickendieck

For example I created this thread by chaining together a series of replies:

social.growyourown.services/@F

It displays in full for me, does it not display in full for you?

@FediTips

You're absolutly right. Never realized it. :D

Just a moment.

Need to test it. :D

@FediTips

I'm speechless.

It works.

Thank you. 🙂

I'm pretty sure, I saw it wrong once and adopted it.

@csickendieck

You're not the first person to suggest this!

I am wondering if there is (or was?) a bug on some app somewhere which causes/caused problems on threads, and replying to the first post was a workaround for that bug?

@FediTips Yes, maybe.I'm pretty sure, I once saw, when I clicked on a reply, in the middle of a thread, only seeing that post and a reply.

Thank you for the clarification.

Good night (in Germany it is 10 pm). ⭐

@csickendieck

It would all be in one view if you replied to replies, there's no need to reply to the original post.

Additionally, if someone clicks on a post in a thread where you've replied to the original post only, it cuts out all of the other posts in the thread. I've attached an example where I clicked on the third post and it cut out the second post.

@FediTips Eh? Reply to your own reply? For real? I remember doing that once back when forums were a thing. Folks were laughing at me. 😅👍

@daniel @FediTips Neither does the Fediverse, but instance owners/administrators will set one in order to avoid tech issues and whatnot.

@adrianmorales @daniel

Just to add, there is no official way for owners to set the character limit on vanilla Mastodon, it's hardcoded to 500.

The only way Masto instances can change this is if the owners alter the code, or if they install a fork like Glitch or Hometown.

@FediTips @adrianmorales It will be helpful if you are on instances that use vanilla Mastodon since it caps on 500 characters. While on a forum, usually it has more than that.
