You don't have to use these though, all of OwnCast's features are available through the web.

@3dcandy @FediTips Not yet, and not fully planned AFAIK. It's worth understanding these apps are the result of Owncasters taking the initiative to solve needs for themselves. Gabe's an iOS user; I have several Rokus in my house and wanted to monitor my own stream.
Given that the Owncast Directory is publicly available, easy to parse JSON, and that Owncast servers put out a simple m3u file for their streams, an enthusiastic Android dev could make one pretty quickly.
@roadriverrail @FediTips thanks.... I just wondered if there were any plans? I mean it's not strictly necessary as you say... but would be nice. Peertube suffers greatly as the apps are so poor as for many the best sources of content are their phones
Installing PeerTube instances as web apps work a lot better than installing the PeerTube app store apps. (More info: https://fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-apps-for-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/)
The app store apps are apparently hamstrung by weird rules that don't work for federated networks 
@FediTips @roadriverrail of course, and I get that. Don't confuse my point with being nasty or against these things - but for some people the need for a decent app outweighs anything else (say the less technical for example). This is why pixelfed loses out to instagram or peertube against youtube. I just aksed the question as I have been kinda away from federated services recently
@3dcandy @FediTips I think there's a disconnect here. Pixelfed is not "losing out" to Instagram nor Peertube to Youtube. There is no competition, and thus no way to "lose". And even if there were a competition, it's like saying Formula One "wins" over someone going for a walk.
Nobody in these projects has the access to massive capital nor the constraints to abuse the world until a profit is made.
And regardless, an app installed via the mobile browser can be just as good as a "native" one.
@roadriverrail @FediTips if you really and honestly believe that, well then I wholly disagree with you. Being so small as to realistically not matter is losing believe me....
@3dcandy @FediTips The concept of "mattering" is always contextual. Matter to whom, and how? Should I likewise conclude that Atlanta Roller Derby "has lost" to the Atlanta Falcons because their audience is orders of magnitude smaller, too? Have my 20 years in roller derby been wasted because it "lost"? Or is it enough to know all the lives I've touched, all the lives that have touched mine, and to know all the struggle, joy, and people who've been made better for it?

Also, commercial centralised social networks shut down when the investors get bored of burning cash. For example Post News got way more funding than Mastodon ever did, but it closed down after barely a year of operation because the money stopped (https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135011/twitter-alternative-post-news-shutdown).
By contrast, non-profit volunteer projects like Mastodon have been going since 2016, PeerTube 2017, Pixelfed 2018 etc. It's slow but sustainable growth.
What VCs did to Ello was very, very sad 
At least it served as a warning for others to avoid the VC path.
