If you're wanting to create your own website or online service, you will probably need to buy a domain name at some point. (Domain names are things like "wikipedia.org")
I've done a beginner's guide to domain names, specifically aimed at non-technical people who want to get started with making their own online things:

@homegrown Great work
Ideally, everyone should have their own domain, at least to secure stable e-mail address regardless of service provider. And then for everything else, such as fediverse instance
Yes! Even just for a stable portable email address a domain name is very useful.

As someone fairly technically inclined just wading into buying a domain for email and a simple site this was really helpful. The only remaining question I have, which may be out of scope, is an understanding of the additional rules some TLDs have - particularly the .au and its implications on whois privacy.
Really glad this was useful!
Yeah, unfortunately I am not a lawyer so it's difficult for me to comment on TLD rules other than to encourage people to read them and read about them.
The Whois privacy issue seems to be possibly coming up in a lot of countries, it makes you wonder if people will just move their domain names to foreign registries?
Another possibility is if third party (or hosting?) companies could provide postal forwarding addresses to show on whois?
@homegrown @noodle I think mentioning ccTLDs is worthwhile, at least to every non American on the internet. A TLD using .com.au or .co.uk or most ccTLDs (with the known “misused” ones like .io it .tv or your already mentioned .af) is well known localization hint. Mist Australians expect a .com.au address for local Australian companies.

Looks like a nice primer into domains :-)
1 suggestion: use the terms renting or leasing, instead of buying. You mention it in your description already, but it might help people to realize it even better.
