Hey there
If you have any questions about how to use Mastodon or the rest of the Fediverse, it is totally fine to ask! I'm an actual human being here, and I'll try to help answer any questions if I can!
I didn't set up this account to be one-directional or mass audience, it's meant to be about helping people directly.
@FediTips sorry for the stupid questions but do I have to have an account for each different server? And can I follow and see people from other servers?
The servers are connected, so you can see and follow people from other servers. For example you and I are on different servers, but we are talking now.
Because the servers are connected, you don't need accounts on every server.
It's like email, you can email anyone even if they're using a different provider because the different providers are connected.
@FediTips thanks for the help! And please if you have any recommendations for popular servers or people to follow let me know
There are lots of ways you can discover interesting people to follow, choose whichever methods suit you best:
By the way, there are no stupid questions on here, it is fine to ask anything!
You only need to have one account. That account can be used across multiple mastodon instances (server).
You can follow people from other instances as well.
Some more technical users even set up their own Mastodon instance just for themselves, and use that to follow and interact with people from other instances.
I haven't seen Bonfire operating in the wild, but my understanding is that Bonfire will optionally allow people to store their data locally on home hardware, while the actual instance they are part of operates remotely.
They have an About page at https://bonfirenetworks.org/about/ but it doesn't really seem to explain what Bonfire actually is?
@FediTips @ganbold bonfire seems to be a development framework. But they also created apps around it like bonfire classic. https://bonfirenetworks.org/app/classic/
@FediTips @ganbold you're welcome. Their libraries seems all be written in a programming language called Elixir.
Like their utils repo https://github.com/bonfire-networks/bonfire_common and their social repo https://github.com/bonfire-networks/bonfire_social.
Elixir runs on erlangs vm. It's a dynamic and functional language. I recommend watching: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JvBT4XBdoUE
@FediTips If an account is moved, and the old account is tagged by someone else, does the new account get a mention/ping/notification about it?
No, they don't. It's worth checking old accounts occasionally in case someone is trying to communicate with them.
Is there a comprehensive guide on how the various apps (mastodon, lemmy, pixelfeed youNameIt) are meant to work together? For instance I managed once to follow a lemmy community with my mastodon account, but I can't post there (I think).
I admit I jumped right at your offer above and did not research it in detail before.
also thank you for being here.
There's nothing that covers interactions between all of them AFAIK, as there are so many of them and their development changes the interactions over time.
Usually you can follow accounts anywhere from Mastodon, and reply to posts too, but if there are features in the platform that Mastodon doesn't have then you won't be able to access those.
Best way to test is to paste an account's Fediverse address into the search box on Mastodon and see what appears: https://fedi.tips/whats-my-accounts-address-how-do-i-follow-other-peoples-addresses-how-can-people-follow-my-address/
@FediTips I think I get it - I wondered if I can use mastodon with my lemmy account, but since lemmy only thinks in communities & cares little for users and hashtags, it won't work.
Is it correct that if my lemmy server also hosted mastodon, I could use one account for both? (with separate apps/webapps)
No, you can't use the same account on different servers, even if they're using the same software. Each server is independent as the network is decentralised.
@FediTips yeah, I get that. (I think) what I mean is if fedi.tips runs a mastodon instance *AND* a lemmy instance, could I use my account for both.
What do you mean by "use your account"?
@FediTips ... to login to Tusky (for mastodon) and Voyager (for lemmy)
I could imagine that in Tusky I see new posts in the lemmy-communities I follow, but in Voyager no mastodon posts with hashtags I follow (because lemmy does not do that)
You can only log in on one server with one account. You can be logged in on many different apps, but they all have to be the same server if you're using one account.
If you want to log in on a different server, you need a separate account.
However, most apps let you log in with several accounts at once and then switch between them within the app.
@FediTips Thank you! For your wonderfulness:)
@FediTips Are the I see only the ones given on my server?
You should be able to see s from other servers too. You may not see all of them though, it depends on how federated the accounts are.
If it's your own post, you should be seeing all of the s.
@FediTips
I used to think that list items couldn't be hidden from home until I just started browsing your site. I keep learning about cool features - thanks for everything!
Aww, thanks
It's quite a new feature to be able to hide Lists from Home, guessing a lot of people don't realise it yet!
@FediTips Can you livestream on the fediverse at all?
Yes, there's a Fediverse livestreaming platform called @owncast which is a bit like Twitch.
People on Mastodon etc can follow OwnCast accounts, and when the stream goes live they will see a post in their timelines about it. Also, they can optionally use their Mastodon etc accounts to verify their identity in OwnCast chat. More info at https://owncast.online
The Fediverse video publishing platform PeerTube also has livestreaming support, but it is not as sophisticated as OwnCast.
p.s. If you want to try following some OwnCast streams, I can recommend some at https://fedi.directory/tag/owncast/
@FediTips and it has for me :) :)
@FediTips how does the trends and the hashtag exploration work? On the official Android mastodon app there is an explore tab with trending hashtags and the stats (of the summary page) look very low compared to the real values (when clicking a hashtag). It feels disconnected
Thanks!
The number stats on the summary page are not very reliable and I would just ignore them. (They have perhaps set the timer for counting things in the stats too low?)
Just click through to a hashtag to see the real situation. Also, graphs tend to be more useful than numbers as they show a larger amount of time on some apps.
@FediTips okay, thanks for your answer.
Sounds great, thank you.
I indeed have a question. I have read that it is possible to mute posts by hashtags per user. While I know how mute hashtags in general I don't know how to do this per user.
For example I follow someone who posts a lot about new games on steam. This floods my timeline. The same person does nice art posts. Therefore I would like to mute the steam hashtag for this user but not the other posts.
As far as I know it is not possible to do that on Mastodon?
The nearest I can think of is that you can mute a user's boosts by going to their profle, clicking ⋯ and then "hide boosts". However, this wouldn't mute their own posts.
Maybe you could set up a filter for words like "steam" etc? It would filter everyone's posts, but if you don't want to see that topic at all maybe it might help?
Thank you. Filtering everyone's posts won't help. I really want to have it only for one user. This one posts really much about steam games flogging my timeline. I am not against the topic in general.
Unfortunately I can't remember where I read that this should be possible. I thought it is a little hidden like it is when you want to mute posts per user if in a language you don't understand. Took a little till I found out it's hidden in the user profile.
It would be great if it was possible! Maybe you were reading about a customised version of Mastodon with extra features, or a different Fediverse platform?
@FediTips ok you got me. Here's a stupid question: What the hell are lists? And what's the difference between Explore and Live Feeds?
Here's all about Lists:
https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/
Explore shows trending things like posts and hashtags and links. These appear based on how much they are being currently shared.
Live Feeds shows the latest public posts on your own server and from other servers. These appear chronologically, with the latest public posts at the top.
@FediTips Hello, couple of days ago, someone I follow mentionned friendi.ca. But after checking their website and Wikipedia, I am not really sure how different it is from Mastodon. Any idea? Thank you.
Friendica is another type of Fediverse server made by a totally different development team, but it is compatible with Mastodon and people on Friendica servers can interact with people on Mastodon servers.
I've done a short article about it at https://fedi.tips/friendica-a-flexible-fediverse-server-type-with-long-posts/
